She is the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament affairs since 2017. Based in New York, she oversees UN processes for setting and implementing norms related to weapons. She has worked in UN Headquarters and country offices, including UN peacekeeping operations, UNHCR, and UNDP. She has also served as professor of international relations and held positions in the Japanese International Cooperation Agency and at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Systems in Sweden.
