He is President of the Pontifical Academy for Life and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and the Family. He was President of the Italian Commission for the reform of health and social care for the elderly population. He is spiritual counsellor of the Community of Sant'Egidio, whose life he has followed since the early 1970s. He has long pastoral experience and is the author of numerous volumes on spirituality and Church history.
