After teaching theology and science of religions at a number of French theological faculties, in 2007 he became Vicar General of Marseille. From 2008 to 2012 he was Consultor at the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. In 2019 he was appointed archbishop of Marseille and created cardinal by Pope Francis in August 2022. He is a member of the Vatican dicasteries for Bishops and for Interreligious Dialogue.
