He is responsible for the Community of Sant'Egidio for relations with the Islamic world and the Middle East. From 1996 to 2005 he was in charge of the ecumenism and dialogue sector of the Italian Episcopal Conference. He is the author of various studies on the history of contemporary Islam, with particular attention to Islamic-Christian dialogue and the relationship between the Muslim world and the West.
