“Nowadays, the Mediterranean obliges us to make important and decisive choices, between responsibility and indifference, between charity and fear." Intervening at the meeting 'Peace with No Borders' in Madrid, promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Archdiocese of the Spanish capital, the President of the Italian Bishops Conference CEI, Mons. Gualtiero Bassetti, underlined: "Never before did we need as much peace for all those who have become displaced due to the war and die in the Mediterranean. We need to thank Lebanon for welcoming thousands of refugees." “We are guardians of creation - he added -  of history, of the future against an obsessive present that characterizes our time. Therefore I have convened a conference with al the representatives of the bishops conferences in the Mediterranean which will take place in Bari from 18 to 23 February 2020, in which the Pope will participate, who has specifically expressed that he doesn't want speeches, but concrete proposals!" "Truely - Bassetti concluded - the interdependence of peoples is not a do-good idea, but a reality of fact, the true perspective of the possibility of coexistence." To Marco Impagliazzo, Presidente of the Community of Sant’Egidio, “the Mediterranean is an intersection of complexity, but also of encounters of the great cosmopolitan cities from antiquity and a sign of coexistence between the religions of the Book. The Mediterranean has another characteristic however: it is united in its climate.”
