French historian, expert in medieval history and great connoisseur of spirituality in Western Christianity of this period. A professor first at the University of Rouen (1980) and then at the University of Paris X Nanterre (1983-1995), he was awarded the Balzan Prize for Medieval History in 2013 in recognition of his innovative studies and his rootedness in the everyday world of the Middle Ages, as well as for his masterful presentation of the life, work and influence of Saint Francis of Assisi.
