Eminences, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Brothers and Sisters, dear friends,

Here we are, all gathered in front of this cathedral that brought millions of people around the world to tears on the evening of April 15, 2019. But Notre-Dame did more than move us deeply; it stirred a great prayer, as would happen for a beloved person struck by tragedy. In a few weeks, emotions will reach their peak when it is once again returned to us as one of those powerful places of prayer to the Lord of the universe.

In this city, the magnificent Olympic and Paralympic Games showcased the virtues of sporting competition, which drives people to surpass themselves, and spread a contagious joy and a desire for people to meet and connect. This city has also, throughout its history, witnessed conversations that led to peace agreements and memorable declarations committing to the respect of every individual.

And here you are, having dedicated your time over these three days to participate in the forums organized by the Community of Sant’ Egidio. For the thirty-eighth time since the memorable Day of Assisi on October 27, 1986, we have heard of children dreaming of the peace that is being stolen from them and of civilian populations resisting the will of war: they want to be led toward peace. Once again, on the basis of our shared humanity, without ignoring our differences but rather learning to understand them better, we have sought to build relationships that are lively, fraternal, and simple.

From these days, we will carry with us the positive images inspired by the spirit of peace: we meet, we talk, we listen to one another. And all of this is already visible... and it is why we are all here tonight, in this city and in this very special place within the city.

Thank you all for having imagined peace together!
