He is Professor Emeritus of Contemporary History at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. He has worked on the history of the Church and Christianity in Europe and China; the history of political systems and the relationship between religion and politics; and the history of international relations and globalisation. He follows research projects with universities and historical institutes in Europe, Asia and Latin America. He has participated in numerous cultural and interreligious dialogue initiatives in Japan, China and Indonesia. He has been a member of the Community of Sant'Egidio since its foundation.
