Member of the Community of Sant'Egidio since its foundation, journalist, he was a member of the Italian Parliament and President of the Social Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. He chaired the Mediterranean Institute of Hematology. He is the international coordinator of the Campaign of the Community of Sant'Egidio for a universal moratorium on executions and one of the founders of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty. He edits studies and essays on emerging poverty.
